Corporations are subject to the state income tax. The current corporate income tax is based on a flat rate of 4.75%. Corporations are required to file annual declarations of estimated tax if the anticipated tax liability exceeds $5,000.

All tangible personal property except prescriptions, groceries and residential energy are subject to retail sales taxes. Colorado sales tax is 2.9%, Mesa County Sales Tax is 2% and City of Grand Junction Sales Tax is 2.75%, making a total sales tax of 7.65%.

The Colorado personal income tax from employees' wages. The tax rate is a flat 4.63% of federal taxable income.

Employers must pay federal and state Unemployment Insurance. The federal tax rate is 6.2% with a credit to the employer of 5.4% if taxes have been paid to the state. This a net federal tax of .8% due on the first $7,000 paid to each employee. State taxes are paid on the first $10,000 wages (before deductions) paid to each employee during any calendar year. The tax rate varies from 1-6.22%. Rates in the construction industry are higher than service firms. All employers in Colorado are required to have Workmen's Compensation insurance coverage for their employees if the have one or more persons engaged in the same business. The premium of Workmen's Compensation insurance coverage is based on units of $100 of payroll. The rate per $100 is based on the risk for the classification of workers employed. Employers have the option of obtaining increases from private insurers for a quasi-state entity.

Property taxes are based on three numbers. The first is the actual value of the property. That figure is multiplied by an assessment ratio (7.96% for residential and 29% for all other property). Mill levies are assessed according to the district in which the property is located. The average mill levy is 70.64 mills per $1,000 of assessed value.
